Here at MoboHost we offer a number of email management solutions.

In this blog post we will be comparing SquirrelMail, Roundcube and Horde, and discussing which webmail application is best for you.

SquirrelMail

SquirrelMail provide users with a simple interface in which users can view and reply to emails.

It allows users to add attachments to emails, but the messages have to be text only, no HTML is supported. This includes adding styles and tags, such as headings etc.

Other features of SquirrelMail are:

  • Folders can be used to organize emails
  • Emails can be flagged
  • Emails can be searched
  • Emails can be viewed in a threaded conversation style
  • Address book

Roundcube

RoundCube is a webmail application that is easy to use, user friendly and has some other features that system administrators can add and customize.

Roundcube has an intuitive and good-looking interface, including all of the features of SquirrelMail as well as a number of additional features, including:

  • Messages can contain HTML
  • Email composition includes a spell checker
  • Drag and drop organization for emails
  • Customisable additional plugins

Horde

The Horde webmail application is recommended for users that are looking for a full suite of options and features, which includes mobile access to emails and productivity tools that are a little more advanced than Roundcube’s.

Out of the three webmail apps we have covered here, Horde is the most fully featured, and is comparable to Outlook in functionality. In addition to the features that are offered by SquirrelMail and Roundcube, Horde also provides users with:

  • Email message filters
  • Calender, task lists and event reminders
  • News feed
  • Mobile email interface

Conclusion

If you are looking for a simple, no frills webmail application, SquirrelMail will do the job just fine. It has a small selection of tools, but the interface is unlikely to overwhelm novice users.

However, if you are looking for more functionality in a nicely presented package, then take a look at RoundCube. RoundCube is certainly a step up from SquirrelMail in terms of functionality, and is second only to Horde in terms of features.

Finally, if you want a fully featured webmail application with mobile access and many of the features you would find with Outlook, choose Horde.
